Urmston
Urmston (ɜmstən pronunciation (help·info)) is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, in Greater Manchester, England, with a population of around 41,000.[1] It lies about six miles (10 km) to the southwest of Manchester city centre, within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire. The southern boundary is marked by the River Mersey and the Mersey Valley, with Stretford lying to the east and Flixton to the west. Davyhulme lies to the north of the town centre. Urmston covers an area of 4,799 acres (19 km²). Flixton House Flixton House was built in 1806 by the Wright family, who had become wealthy land owners in Flixton. Barton Swing Aqueduct The Barton Swing Aqueduct is a moveable aqueduct in Barton upon Irwell in Greater Manchester, England. It carries the Bridgewater Canal across the Manchester Ship Canal, the swinging action allows large vessels using the Manchester Ship Canal to pass underneath and smaller narrowboats to cross over the top. The aqueduct is a Grade II* listed building[1] and is considered a major feat of Victorian civil engineering.[1][2] Designed by Sir Edward Leader Williams and built by Andrew Handyside of Derby, it opened in 1894 and remains in regular use.
